China Medical University Hospital (CMUH) in Taiwan announced its collaboration with Google Cloud in December 2023. Through Google Cloud’s generative AI technology, including MedLM based on Med-PaLM 2, CMUH developed an “AI-assisted Physician” system to aid healthcare professionals in disease diagnosis, treatment planning, patient education, and medical research.
Assistive Tools for Precision Cancer Treatment
The collaboration aims to introduce assistive tools for precision cancer treatment, such as “Customized Cancer Treatment Guidelines” and “Cancer Therapy Q&As.” These tools reduce time spent searching for information, aiding in cancer treatment planning and patient education.
CMUH’s Role as a Pioneer in Smart Healthcare
CMUH is among the first in Asia to test MedLM. Aiming to enhance smart healthcare in Taiwan. MedLM provides rapid data analysis for drug guidelines, disease gene sequencing, and medical records, accelerating treatment discovery and plans.
CMUH was recognized as the world’s third smart hospital by HIMSS in 2022 and named one of the World’s Best Hospitals by Newsweek for 2023 and 2024. With widespread recognition, CMUH is committed to advancing smart healthcare services.
Google Cloud’s Contribution to Healthcare Innovation
Google Cloud’s Managing Director for North Asia, Kathy Lee, emphasized AI’s potential to enhance healthcare efficiency and patient outcomes. Aashima Gupta, Global Director of Healthcare Strategy and Solutions, highlighted gen AI’s role in reducing staff workload and improving patient care.
Applications and Innovations
CMUH’s partnership with Google Cloud and its collaborative efforts have resulted in the development of innovative applications aimed at revolutionizing cancer treatment protocols and patient care standards. Among these groundbreaking applications are the “Customized Cancer Treatment Guidelines” and the “Cancer Therapy Q&As,” which have been meticulously crafted to streamline the intricacies of cancer treatment planning while simultaneously enriching patient education initiatives. By leveraging advanced technology and medical expertise, these applications not only optimize treatment strategies but also foster a more informed and engaged patient community. Through these tailored solutions, CMUH and Google Cloud are paving the way for enhanced doctor-patient interactions, ultimately contributing to the advancement of comprehensive cancer care.
Utilizing Advanced AI Technology
CMUH utilizes Google’s AI accelerator, TPU, for new drug development, reducing computation time by over tenfold. The hospital’s Artificial Intelligence Center has developed over 20 AI medical services in recent years, aiding doctors in making accurate medical decisions.
